Evan Almighty
6/22/07
This was too short. In the first ten minutes, God appeared, which gave the movie sort of a rushed feel. There was almost no build-up to the climax. In fact, the story didn't even make much sense: Evan Baxter (Steve Carell) constructs an ark to house the animals of the world from a flood that's happening in a few blocks of New York. Since the plot lacked by a huge margin, the rating suffers to very harmful extent. The only part I can truly praise is how the construction of the ark was shown to be so detailed and in-depth. The rest was comedic, but not nearly as good as I thought it would be. It was also very short; the 96 minutes it took up seemed to be more like 60. Steven Carell was pretty funny, and the audience did get a thrill out of him, but the movie was just lacking. And, honestly, it says this film is rated PG on 580wdbo.com...and I really don't see how. There was more than "mild rude humor", especially in a certain joke about hot dogs that was present. Whatever. The other actors didn't have big enough parts to be mentioned too much (although the wife was indeed Lauren Graham, the mom from Gilmore Girls), but what they had to do and say was entertaining. At the end, too, they showed a lot of extra things that were all behind the scenes, and thus very entertaining. I haven't seen that done before. A conga line while the credits roll? Yeah, that's just made of win.
4.8.
