Hairspray
7/20/07

Hairspray is all about dancing, civil rights, the '60s, and more dancing. Normally I wouldn't enjoy that kind of thing, but this time around, I was extremely impressed with the performances. Everything was in sync, and the jokes in the midst of dances were pretty funny. Even between all of the celebrating and moving, the script included many puns and comments that were just hilarious. John Travolta was such a joke (playing Tracy Turnblad's girly and overweight mother), in a pleasant way, that he upped the movie's rating quite a bit. He feels that, to be a truly accomplished actor, one must play all the roles one is capable of. Travolta definitely showed what he could do in the most convincing and amusing female role I've seen so far.

So the movie snuck in some racist jokes and sexual innuendo, but ultimately, it had an innocent moral. It tried to teach how to be fair to one another and reach for your own dreams without fail, which is always a pleasant lesson of which most of society today loses sight. Amanda Bynes, cheerful as she is, made an appearance as one of the supporting actresses, helping Tracy (played by newcomer Nikki Blonsky) to stretch for the stars in dancing and getting equal rights for blacks. Since the film concentrates on the '60s, it's understandable to see how blacks were a big part of the story. Everything was very happy-go-lucky, and it's a fun movie. It just wouldn't be entertaining if one were in a bad mood while watching. Definitely a classic that made me laugh.
